Year levels and pathways

A child can have more than one year level and switch between them. Senior years can also choose a pathway such as Calculus or Statistics.

Kākā Math covers the New Zealand curriculum from Year 1 to Year 13, including NCEA Levels 1 to 3.

Giving a child more than one year

A child can have several year levels at once, for example their own year and the one below to fill gaps, or the one above for extension.

To change them, open your child’s page, tap the pencil to edit, and tick or untick under Year levels. At least one has to stay ticked.

Your own learning profile, if you learn alongside a child on a weekly plan, has year levels too. The app asks for them the first time you turn on Learn alongside.

Switching between years

When a child has more than one year, the Learn tab shows a chip for each. Tapping a chip switches the topics shown and clears anything typed in the topic search. Progress in each year is kept separately, so switching back loses nothing.

Pathways in the senior years

Some senior years split into pathways, for example Year 13 Calculus and Year 13 Statistics. Where a year has more than one, the Learn tab offers a choice of pathway.

Not sure which year to choose
