A whole year of maths, one lesson at a time

Kākā Math walks your child through their year level topic by topic and lesson by lesson. Teaching first, then practising, with a tutor that helps them get there rather than handing over the answer.

How a lesson works

From "what are we doing today?" to a finished lesson

Every topic runs the same way, so a child always knows what comes next. These are real screens from the app, in the order a student sees them.

The Year 6 topic list: Millions, Negatives & Number Properties marked Completed, Advanced Multiplication, Division & BEDMAS at 25% with 2 of 8 lessons done, then Fractions, Decimals and Patterns waiting.

Step 1 of 7

Pick your year

Her year, in order, with how far through each topic she is.

A topic introduction headed Advanced Multiplication, Division, and BEDMAS: a four-minute read covering Napier's Bones and why large calculations matter.

Step 2 of 7

Meet the topic

A short read on where the maths came from and why it matters.

The lesson Division with 4-Digit and 5-Digit Numbers: 20 minutes, 15 feathers, a Kākā introducing the bus stop method, and links to Read More and Example Questions.

Step 3 of 7

Learn it

What the lesson teaches, how long it takes, what it pays.

A worked example at Step 2 of 4, showing 4,872 ÷ 6 estimated first, then the bus stop division set out with the working explained underneath.

Step 4 of 7

See it worked

A full solution walked one step at a time, working shown.

Question 8 of 11, a Numeric question reading Calculate 24,568 ÷ 8, type the quotient only, with the number keypad ready underneath and a note suggesting pencil and paper.

Step 5 of 7

Practise it

Question 8 of 11, one of 19 question types.

A Help sheet over the question showing Hint 1 of 2, estimate first because 24,000 ÷ 8 is about 3,000, and a Reveal Next Hint button, so the student gets one nudge at a time and never the answer.

Step 6 of 7

Stuck? A hint, not the answer

One nudge at a time, revealed only when asked for.

A Lesson Complete screen: 11 of 11 correct, plus 4 Feathers earned, plus 2 Altitude gained, and a new badge.

Step 7 of 7

Done, earn Feathers

11 of 11, +4 Feathers, +2 Altitude and a badge.

Step 1 of 7

Teaching comes first

1,500+ lessons, each with a written explanation, step-by-step worked examples and interactive diagrams, all before a single practice question. Lessons and worked examples can be read aloud, and any maths term can be tapped for a definition without leaving the page.

19 question types

36,000+ questions across 19 different types: multiple choice, drag-and-drop, graph plotting, ordering, estimation, comparison, word problems and written working among them, so a topic is tested the way it is actually used.

Hints, never answers

Stuck on a question, a student gets one hint at a time. A gentle nudge first, more detail only if they ask again. No judgement, no frustration, and no shortcut to the answer.

It doesn't forget

Quick Review pulls questions back from recent topics day after day, difficulty adjusts to how a student is going, and when a gap shows up the app resurfaces the earlier lesson that fills it.

Dynamic Curriculum

Built on the NZ Maths Curriculum

Every topic, lesson, and question in Kākā Math is structured around the New Zealand Mathematics curriculum. Six strands, covering Year 1 through to NCEA Level 3, with content carefully sequenced so students build on what they already know.

  • Year 1-13 Coverage

From primary through to NCEA Level 3

  • Adaptive Difficulty

Adjusts challenge level based on how students are performing

  • Gap Identification

Spots knowledge gaps and resurfaces earlier topics to fill them

Mia's Nest screen: 640 Feathers, 310 Altitude, a 6-day streak, a Daily Forage to complete 5 lessons, and a Quick Review of 8 questions from topics she has been learning.
The Nest, where a student lands, with today's Daily Forage and Quick Review waiting.

Cheeky Check

Snap. Analyse. Learn.

Students can photograph their handwritten maths work: homework, practice problems, or test prep. Our AI instantly analyses the working, identifying exactly where they went right and where they need help.

  • Handwriting Recognition

Reads handwritten working, including messy pages

  • Step-by-Step Analysis

    Identifies exactly where mistakes occurred

  • Socratic Hints

Guides students to the answer without giving it away

A Cheeky Check result: Kākā found 5 questions on the homework, marking two correct, two incorrect and one not attempted, each tagged Easy, Medium or Hard.
Five questions read off one photo of a homework page, marked and ready to work through.
Gamification

Learning That Feels Like Playing

Maths should be fun. Our gamification system keeps students motivated with goals worth chasing and visible progress.

Feathers

Mini Games

Learn While You Play

Three mini-games that make maths practice feel like play. Each game earns Feathers, and harder settings pay out more.

Times Table Challenge

A fast-paced challenge dedicated to times table fluency. Students pick which tables to practise, then answer endless timed questions with 3 lives. The timer gets faster as they go, and harder table combinations earn more Feathers.

  • Choose Your Tables

Pick individual tables from 1 to 12, or use presets like Easy (2, 5, 10) and Tricky (6-9)

  • Voice or Keypad

Answer by typing on the number pad or by speaking the answer aloud

  • Increasing Speed

The timer gets faster every 5 questions, so see how far you can go before running out of lives

The Times Table Challenge setup screen: presets for 1–10, 1–12, Tricky (6-9) and Easy (2,5,10), all twelve tables selected, a 1.3× multiplier, 3 lives in endless mode and a Voice Input toggle.
Setting up a run: which tables, how hard, and whether to answer by voice.
The Kākā Munchers setup screen: Munch the multiples, difficulty presets from Easy (2-5) to All (2-12), five numbers selected, 5 rounds and a 1.0× multiplier.
Choosing the multiples before the grid appears.

Kākā Munchers

Navigate the Kākā across a grid of numbers and munch the multiples of a target number. But watch out. A sneaky stoat roams the grid from round 2 onwards, and bumping into it costs a life.

  • 5 Rounds

Each round has a new target number and a fresh grid of 30 numbers to search through

  • Dodge the Stoat

A stoat enemy gets faster each round, chasing the Kākā across the grid

  • Choose Your Multiples

Pick which multiples to practise (2-12) with presets from Easy to Hard

Connect the Dots

Solve maths questions and tap the dot with the correct answer to connect them one by one, revealing a mystery shape. With decoy dots mixed in and a timer that gets faster each round, it takes both speed and accuracy to complete the picture.

  • Mystery Shapes

16 shapes to discover, from stars and rockets to fish and dinosaurs

  • Three Difficulty Levels

Easy (addition and subtraction), Medium (adds multiplication), or Hard (all four operations)

  • Watch Out for Decoys

Decoy dots are mixed in with the real ones, and tapping a decoy costs a life

The Connect the Dots setup screen: Solve & Connect, difficulty Easy, Medium or Hard with their number ranges and score multipliers, 15 seconds per question, 6 decoy dots and 3 lives.
Picking a difficulty before the mystery shape is revealed.
The Hollow with 640 Feathers to spend, tabs for Avatars, Themes and Wishes, and a grid of Kākā costumes: Explorer, Scholar, Artist and Gardener already unlocked, Chef costing 100 Feathers.
640 Feathers, and a Chef Kākā costing 100 of them.

A Kiwi Touch

A Mascot That Lives in Aotearoa

The Kākā mascot changes with the seasons and celebrates alongside your child. Dressed for summer, rugged up in winter, celebrating Matariki, Waitangi Day, ANZAC Day, and even wearing a party hat on your child's birthday. It's the small details that make Kākā Math feel like home.
