Notifications

Each kind of notification can be switched on or off separately, for you and for each child.

Where the settings are

  • iPhone and iPad: Profile, then Settings, then switch on Push Notifications. The individual switches appear underneath once it is on. Weekly Summary is there even with it off, because it also controls the Monday email.
  • Android: Profile, then Notifications. The same screen is also under Settings, then Notification Settings. Android doesn’t ask for permission on its own; tap Turn on notifications at the top of that screen when you want them. If you have said no before, it reads Open settings and takes you to your phone’s settings for Kākā Math.

Your notifications, as a parent

Notification When it arrives
Wishes Your child has traded Feathers for a Wish
Weekly Summary Monday at 8am, saying how many lessons each child finished the week before. Not sent in a week when nobody finished one. The same switch controls the Monday email
Weekend check Your child has finished a weekly plan weekend check, with their score. Tapping it opens their page. The Weekly Summary switch controls it
Numeracy Test Completed Your child has finished a practice test. You get an email with the score too
Flock Invites, Flock Joined Someone has invited you to their flock, or a family you invited has joined yours
Family Invites, Family Joined Someone has invited you to their family, or an adult you invited has joined yours

An invitation always comes by email. The invite notification only arrives as well if the address already has a Kākā Math account.

Each adult in the family has their own switches. Turning one off on your phone doesn’t turn it off for the other adult.

Your child’s notifications

These switches are on your child’s own settings. Switch to your child, open Explore, then Profile & Settings. On Android, tap Notification Settings there.

Notification When it arrives
Practice Reminders At the Reminder Time you choose, 7am unless you change it. Daily while your child is practising. After a few days away it comes every other day, after a week on Mondays and Thursdays only, after a month on Mondays only, and after two months it stops. It starts once your child has done some practice. On a weekly plan it comes every day the plan has something to do, and says how many questions are in today’s practice, which lessons to start if none has been started, or that the weekend check is ready
Cheeky Check Ready Kākā has finished checking a photo, of one question or a whole worksheet, or couldn’t read it. A check you run for your child from your own Scan tab notifies your phone instead, and there’s no switch for that one

The practice reminder goes to every phone signed in to your family, yours included, so a child using a shared device still sees it. To stop it, switch it off on that child’s settings.

Each switch has a line under it saying what it is for. The names and the order are the same on iPhone, iPad and Android.

The notifications list

Every push notification is also kept in the app. Tap the bell at the top of your Home tab, or at the top of your child’s Nest, to see the list, newest first. A number on the bell says how many are unread, and opening the list marks them all as read. On iPhone and iPad, pull down to refresh it.

A Numeracy Test Completed row opens that test’s results, and a weekend check row opens your child’s page, the same as tapping the notification itself. Both come to you, so they are only ever in your own list, never your child’s. Other rows are there to read.

If the list says “No notifications yet”, nothing has been sent to that account so far.
