Reading what Kākā says back

Kākā shows what it read, teaches the method a step at a time, lets your child check themselves, then shows the solution.

A single question

The response comes as a run of cards. It opens with a line from Kākā about the question, and Start begins:

  1. Your Work. What Kākā read from the photo. If something went wrong in the working, this is where it says so.
  2. The steps. The method, one step at a time. Each step asks your child to have a think first, and Show me this step reveals it when they are ready.
  3. Check Yourself. A quick multiple-choice question about the answer, so your child commits to one before seeing it. Just show me skips straight to the solution.
  4. Solution. The full worked answer.

A worksheet

Kākā says how many questions it found and lists them, each marked:

Mark What it means
Correct The answer and the working are right
Incorrect Something went wrong. Open it to see where
Not attempted yet Kākā found the question but no working for it
Couldn’t read this one The handwriting or the photo was not clear enough

Tap any question to go through the same steps as a single question.

When Kākā can’t read a diagram

The answer to a diagram question depends on which side or angle the diagram marks. If Kākā can’t tell, it does not guess. The question shows that Kākā could not read the diagram, and has no steps or answer. Snap that question on its own, close up and in good light, for a closer look.

Question numbers follow the numbers printed on the sheet. If Kākā gets a diagram wrong, please tell us.

Revise this topic

On a worksheet, a question’s Solution card ends with a Revise this topic button, for more practice on the same topic. When every question Kākā placed is on the same topic, one more sits under the list. A single-question check doesn’t have one.

On iPhone and iPad it closes Cheeky Check and opens the topic in the Learn tab. On Android it opens a Topic Recap for it. The button is on your child’s screens only, not on a check you run yourself, because a parent account has no Learn tab.

When Kākā reads something wrongly

Handwriting is hard, and Kākā sometimes misreads a digit. If Your Work shows something your child didn’t write, retake the photo closer and in better light. If it keeps happening on clear work, please tell us.
